This is the VOA Special English Education Report.

In recent years, Bill Gates has given financial support to improve American education.

Late last year, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation launched the Measures of Effective Teaching project. The project tests new ways to recognize what makes a good teacher.

Its goal is to help educators and policymakers identify and support good teaching.

The study is being carried out in public school systems in seven American cities. Thousands of teachers volunteered to take part. They agreed to have their classes recorded on video, but only for observation by expert researchers.

Last spring, the project collected digital videos of thirteen thousand lessons in the classrooms taught by the teachers. They were in grades four through nine.

Researchers also collected information from students. They asked students to report their opinions of each teacher’s classroom. Students were also tested in mathematics, English and biology.

Officials recently released early results of the project study. The report says teachers’ past success in raising student scores on state tests is one of the strongest signs of their ability to do so again. This is known as a teacher’s “value-added.”

The teachers with the highest value-added scores on state tests also help students understand math or show reading ability.

The results also say students know effective teaching when they experience it. The students gave comments on whether or not their teachers cared about them. They also gave opinions on how much teachers controlled or managed student behavior in the classroom.

The report found that classrooms where students reported positive experiences were more likely to show greater learning gains.

Another finding shows that combining different sources of information helps administrators provide better comments and suggestions to teachers. In many cases, administrators had been basing their comments on student test scores only.

The Measures of Effective Teaching project continues through twenty twelve when final results will be released. Researchers plan to test a new measure that examines what a teacher knows about how to teach a subject. Experts say these findings could also help create better training and development for teachers.

That kind of test would benefit the education system as it provide a sight for the researchers to overview the quality of education within a country and take remedies in improving the quality. Its important to be conducted as to wake up those lazy teachers who never hit the book and not mastering the subject matter. So it can make them more aware of the profession and start continous learning too.

When I was a kid, teachers were special people. Students, parents and the society trusted and respected them unconditionally. Today, we often hear negative stories about teachers ranging from the bad teaching abilities to some criminal activities. I don't know if teachers have changed or the society has just changed, but I hope this kind of efforts in this article will help restore teachers' confidence in the society.

I don't think that collecting students' opinions about their teachers is good, because it can make teaching a popularity contest and weaken teachers' authority. If I were a teacher working under such conditions, I would try to be popular among students and think twice before scolding them, even when necessary.

We are facing so much subjects that we must learn every day.so that we have a little time to study each subject.i think the most important thing is how to teach in class.so it is also very important for teachers to improve their teaching mathod.

this is a useful project. In Vietnam, teachers have some problems, specially at dictrict's schools. Howerver, it is quite hard to implement the same project, because sometime students lie about teachers and teaching. And, vietnamese students hardly comment about teachers directly. Different culture, different methods.

I feel it regrettable that, when I was a student, subjects written on a textbook were only told by my teachers. If I had been taught more than the coverage, my interest would be more broaden. But now as an adult, I understand how limited teacher's working hours are. From preparation to choirs after the class, what to do must be tough. I feel and sympathize. There's a gap between ideal and reality. Therefore, we shouldn't rely too much on teachers or blame on them.

Other environment factors such as parents are also responsible for quality education.

There are more and more teachers with average inlectureal power and also no scruple in Viet nam nowaday because the University gate is so open that almost everyone can enter the university and the quality of teaching in the universities are worse and worse which effects rudimentarily on many field of social development. So poor Vietnamese students nowaday and poor our superstructure.When will our country have some project like that?

The students who have been taking part in the project are four through nine grades. I think that it is a little bit difficult to give accurate comments about their teachers due to young age. When I was a kid, I studied more and listened carefully in my favorite teacher's class. Actually, the way of the way of teaching plyas an important in improving student's ability. However, test score is likely to relate teacher's personality rather than how to teach a subject.

I think this is a interested report. Improving teaching is not only important for American but also for the world wide future. Teachers not only teach students how to get high score, but also very important to teach them good behaviour and good thinking. The way they learn from school is also the way they will react in society community. I believe that they will find out a best solution for this matter.

finding new ways to improve eduaction is a very good way of helping our society and the world because this report can be used worldwide. thank you voa for doing this.

In my country TV transmits no good education programs. People receive the most negative informal education throughout TV., so teachers have to work more to change the negative behavior students get from TV. i guess it is the same problem in all the countries.

This report is very helpful as the update and interesting news to us. The way which Bill Gates does is so great. It not only improves teaching quality of teachers, but also leverages study attitude of students. If there is record in classes and assessment by experts, teachers will be more responsible and even creative for their classroom. On the other hand, I don’t appreciate to the survey to students. It doesn't reflect accurate results due to students' bias view. Anyway, thanks for the report.
