Heidaripoor-2017/02/03-26

Hi

I finished studying part “vocabulary ” of lesson one in level one. I had two questions, that one of the was answered by Admin but another one is:

In this sentence: when a person is safe, they are not in danger. I sent its picture to Admin because I can’t send picture in my report, I had to do that

Why use  ( they are) for  ( a person) ? Is there a particular reason?

Thank you so much for your helping me .

salamzaban:

in English, they have two different pronouns for male and female (he & she)

so whenever they want to refer to someone without mentioning his or her gender, they have to say ” he or she”, but it’s a little long and difficult to say, so they don’t have any other choice instead of using “they”

in the past they used “he” for referring to a person, but after feminism movements they decided to use “they” when they want to refer to a person without mentioning his or her gender!
